Scouting Mission
"This is a military exercise, nothing more."

Why do your military "exercises" include traversing half the continent, a bunch of overpowered bandits, a chimera, a cyclops, an entire legion of hob goblins and a DRAGON!? (drake?)

Seriously, keeping Mercedes alive felt like guiding a infant through Sen's Funhouse. She can't even drop down ledges.

edit: took a screenshot to remember the occasion.

That tiny dot at the bottom of the minimap, behind the dragon, is Mercedes. Yep.

You can also put a Port Crystal at the destination and just teleport there with Mercedes... :p

I believe you can also carry her as you run away from everything. Just stock up on meat and keep pounding it down your throat as you run.

I did this mission almost immediately upon arriving in Gran Soren. Hadn't found a port crystal at that point.

A good suggestion.

That was a mistake, but at the same time gave you an adventure :) Things like these are what made me love the game in the first place and now when I talk to new players I can go "Yeah, one time I did this lol, it was terrible" :D

That is true, yeah.

On a side note: I was really confused when I arrived at the Fort. I only just did the goblin invasion quest thing yesterday afternoon, and had no idea of why I couldn't get in.

The alternative, and best solution is really to hold off on most the escort quests until late game. With the exception of a few early on, they're optional and are just there as a way of doing some free-form missions instead of just hunting things.

As you go through the game, having cleared the quarry can give you a much safer passage east.

I don't even know what the quarry is, but I'll take your word for it.

Haven't dared try an escort mission since the scouting incident.

You don't even have to go near the Drake.

Also daily reminder that Mercedes belongs to me.

I dunno man, the hellfire grove (or whatever that area was called) seemed like it was right in front of the Fort.

Besides, I was already running from a cyclops and a bunch of hob gobs (the chimera gave up on the chase earlier), and didn't really have time to consider my options on where to go.

there is a lake there. Drake is to the left, if you go around the lake on the right side, no drake ;)
