Is it just me or do mages suck?
First time playing this game. My mage is just...bad, it seems. Even after unlocking a bunch of new skills. It feels so weak, slow and unsatisfying. I noticed you can respec. Should I?

They get more pwesome as you gain more skills.

Try Sorcerer for a while, until you get the third tier of spells.

Starting as a mage is really hard going, because you have less HP and defense than other classes. You should definitely consider changing class to fighter or warrior at some point and unlock augments that give you more HP, carrying capacity and reduce damage taken. You might consider hiring a pawn with the Guardian inclination as well, they try to stick near you and defend you more often. You can view inclinations on the pawn's status window in the Profile tab.

Mage with holy focused bolts can easily trivialize the vast majority of game, including post content. With the added benefit of not leaving support to the whims of the AI.
Really now, holy focused bolts are just insane. Homing, piercing, no stamina cost, fast, high damage, can be used from afar, can be charged while moving/jumping/levitating, hit multiple enemies.
Frankly I feel sorc spells take far too long to cast even with agument and wyrmking ring, not to mention leaving you as vulnerable as a newborn kitten while and sometimes after casting as well.

Maelstrom makes sorc feel like hte strongest thing in the game. just wait til you get it

Are you charging your spells? They are pretty weak unless you charge them up.

I play first as an Warrior to get 40HP per LV, because Sorcerer get only 16HP per LV. After 10 level i will change back to Sorcerer.

Nah, I started a new game as Fighter. It's not only him. To make damage with your staff, you always have to boost it with an element, first. That's an annoying concept.

And the second feeling about the mage was, that he has to be far, far away from the actual combat, otherwise he got his ass handed on a silverplate in mere seconds.

Yeah, took me hours to realize that. But even when charged, sometimes there are too many enemies to fight.

It surprises you that not using magic as a mage sucks.

Early on it seems that way. The mage class in particular I find ia used primarily as a healer. Later on Sorc AoE's will decimate any thing and every thing unfortunate enough to be in your path.

You do need a pawn or two dedicated to keeping you safe while casting. Charging takes time without spell synching, but pays off once you get the spell off.

Mage is for suport with secondary damage, you wanna dunk monsters with giant spells you go sorc and stack on the pain. Fulmination is amazingly cool.

It's also worth noting that while starting as a fighter or strider and switching to sorc later is tempting, you will have a much better stats geared for a sorc starting as a mage.

No, it's not just you. They wear dresses and funny hats. They fling spells around like fairies or elves instead of getting a sword or mace out and doing some proper work. Mages have always sucked.
