How are the save system and death penalty?

What is the save system like? Save anytime / Save only out of combat / save only at specific areas / checkpoints / autosave only?

What is the death penalty?

You can save anytime and the game autosaves frequently.

There is no death penalty (Just start from last save/or checkpoint), but you will die.. A LOT!

Save out of combat. It also has checkpoints but not while you are just running around so you should save often. When you die you can retry form your last save or the last checkpoint if you havent saved in a while but dont choose "retry from checkpoint"(choose the first option which is just "retry") because that throws you back at the inn where you rested last time which can be hours of gameplay lost.
