Am I to regularly switch out pawns?
I notice that hired pawns don't seem to level with me.

I grew quite fond of a tiny goblin like sorcerer, but he keeps dying because he is stuck at lvl 4, do I have to let him go and hope his owner levels him up so I can rehire him sometime later?

Is that how it works?

Also, I am stuck deep in the first real dungeon, and begin to wish I brought an archer with me. Is there a way to switch pawns mid-dungeon?

Yes you are, Best thing to do is hire pawns 2-3 levels above you and when you get a few levels ahead of them rinse and repeat.

Unless the person that owns the pawn is playing as much as you are and checking in at the Inn often, yes, you will have to find new pawns that're closer to your level. Also, the very first pawn, named rook, he is completely fake, not a player's pawn, and he will not level.
And no can only switch pawns at the rift stone sorry mate.

Favourite him.
It's likely the owner has levelled him up and updated him by now.
Using Favourites, you'll be able to find him again.

Or just be friend with someone you know is gonna be grinding, and refresh their pawn every day or so.

Rook is there just to show how having a pawn in your party is hes completely fake.

Hired pawn don't level with you, so If there is a pawn you like favourite them and when the owner levels them up rent them out again

Just mark that pawn as a favorite so you can search for him later after his user levels him up a bit more or add the pawn's creator/primary user to your friends list.
The idea behind 'Foriegn Pawns' not leveling up is precisely to encourage players to use a wide variety of pawns, giving everyone a chance to have their pawns used evenly though the option to use 3 of one's friends' pawns does detract from that goal somewhat.

This, don't forget to regularly teach and update your own Pawn's gear and vocations. AND give them useful stuff to boot. They'll mine for you if you have a Pick for them and DEFINITELY give them a Lanten as they'll never run out of oil. This will also help when you send them out for others to use as well.

If any of you see a fighter named fasbreach, please hire him. The chap is bored.

Rook is not a "tiny goblin".
Pay attention.

Pawns (outside of your special one) are meant to be abused and discarded when the time comes........

Pawns scale with your level. The only thing to gain from hiring above your current level is to use any spells or moves not yet unlocked.

Thanks for the tips!

Now I feel like a chump with my puny lvl 4 pawns... =.=
