use it with SHIFT to selfcast...

...or if you're using a controller, click the left analog stick in to toggle auto-aim. It works with almost every spell.

It seems targeting for that one is limited to pawns, players cannot use it.

You have to manually target Anodyne. Pawns are just really good at it so it seems like they lock on.

To heal yourself, just aim the spell point right next to you and release.

You aim, and this is pretty retaded, with an invisible crosschair, which appers moment before you fire. There is a lock-on option in this game too, just...you can't actually tell where are you aiming at the moment.
Those are the facts you know.

What you may not know is that your Arisen's body direction doesn't matter as much as the camera right/left orientation. IOW you cycle through individial targets/points, one by one, by turning the camera left-right.

Also: you don't just use any Shift for targetting yourself/target manually, only Left Shift works (this and few others can be changed in a config file). Mind that the manual crosschair will cling to the ground so it'll "fall down" into any pit you'll point it on.

What do you mean invisible crosshair? If you press the left analogue stick during cast you get a reticle for aiming. It's certainly not invisible...

I gotta tell you.. I have played as a mage/sorcerer in every FRPG I have ever played, it has ALWAYS been my favorite style of gameplay, but in this particular game.. I avoid it like the plague, the controls for a mage are not very intuitive.

Mid casting, yes. Mage has invisible passive crosschair though, like for aiming core skill, estimating the Lock On distance aso.
You don't know where it's lock on (and it locks on, you can't manually aim your staff) untill you actually start to cast (which in case of core skill means when you're about to fire).
Also, whenever a skill offers a manual mode (for whatever reason it's the healing spells that have this default not the other way around), its crosschair clings to the ground which makes aiming over say gaps impossible and overall aiming well... sluggish? I think that's the good word.
Oh, almost forgot: manual aiming also makes you camera view turn into awkward, movie like positions.

Yeah, aiming the "ground" spells manually is a ♥♥♥♥♥. Trying to cast Comestion around a corner is nigh on impossible lol.

While holding your secondary or primary skill button activate healing skill while it is charging you can steer it with A;W;S;D keys of course you have to hold skill button while doing it.

All Healing- and Defense-Spells are aoe. So, you don't have to aim a special character. this is true for
Halidom (and high)
Anydom (and high)
Spellscreen (and high)
voidspell (and high)

Voidspell is a Sorcerer-only-Spell though. (the only defense-spell the sorcerer has, and the only spell which can cure petrification.)

Pawns seem to lock on, though, when they cast those spells. But it isn't necessary.

Most Attack-Spells have a lock on. To deactivate this, click shift. (Don't hold, just click.) To aim an enchantment on yourself, also just click the shift-key.

Some Spells don't have an aim at all (Sorcerer Bolide (and high) and Seism (and high) ) Just cast. They're the grand bombs in the game. Mahlstrom has an aim, though. And Gicel, too.

Gicel is the only true magicuser-spell which can effectivly damage a metal-golem, since it's aimed horizontal and has a physical-damage-component. Frigor attacks verticaly and therefore is much more difficult to aim precisly.

Luckily, metal-golems are seldom and late-game enemies. So it's more useful to change vocation just for it... (and go with a pure physical-aimed group.)

Oh, and there're also some "aura"-spells. They don't have an aim, too. You cast them and release to create an aura around you. You're channeling this aura, so you can't attack. To deactivate, just jump.
