Why is it that we all know film sequels will likely not be as good as the first, but we all expect gaming sequels to be better? Maybe the two are more similar than we think; as technology improves, both become more focused on effects and eye-candy, at the expense of narrative and content.

Movies used to be mostly self-contained stories (before every studio decided that every movie has to set up a cinematic universe). This made sequels often feel unnecessary since a sequel usually can't improve upon the visuals and audio and the stories weren't originally meant to continue.

Games as an interactive medium have systems that can be improved and iterated upon. Sequels can add new mechanics and fun ways to interact with the world since the devs already have the base gameplay ironed out.

The problem with DD2 is that they made the combat smoother, and the world bigger and prettier. But they didn't really add many new systems, in fact they removed some, like having daggers and bows, and shields having their own 3 ability slots separate from the sword. So that leaves us with the story, which is also a huge downgrade.

First game has more varied content in a more compact form and vocations have more skills to experiment with. It also has the perfect level of jank.

No vocations at all, just single weapon choices with a few unlockables. Itsuno should have just gone full Monster Hunter at that point, they did it better.

Man. I'm still upset that we got sold an unfinished game. I waited ten years for this...

It has vocations, they're just a downgrade from 1 and for some reason green is an option but not green and red, green and blue or (ah you know what it iiiis) green and purple

Semantically there is no difference is what I'm saying. Because Itsuno simplified the vocations down to a single weapon choice it would be the same as a classless system where you have to go back to town to change your weapon out. Only difference is you have to narrow the weapon's moveset down to 4 buttons you get to choose, wow such arr pee gee.

I don't fault anyone for enjoying it, especially if they played it first, but DD2 isn't worth the massive price tag versus what DDDA offers. Can't help but see it as a tremendous waste, honestly. Even after getting a second shot, the game still ended up unfinished, no doubt once again due to executive meddling and artificial deadlines.

A remaster and expansion would have been much better. Keep the bones, polish up the existing assets, and add all of the extra content the game was intended to have originally.

The sequel is super mid. Dark Arisen is much better and it's not even close.

Played DD on 360 when it first came out and didn't care for it
Played DD2 when it came out and had a good time
Played DD:DA after beating DD2 and now I prefer DD:DA

DD2 is inferior to DD1. Plain and simple, in every aspect. Even the post-game is a missed opportunity that the developers just completely screwed up on. I hate it when devs put a 'timer' on how long you can be doing something before a world-eating fog just kills everything off. Yay.

In DD1 in post-game you can just take your time in a post-apocalypse hellscape. In DD2, you have literally only 7 in-game days to get stuff done before its hard-locked off behind a fog of 'screw you, go into new game plus'.

I've only put as much hours into the second game over the first as I have because I spent 70 bucks on the game, and I'm getting my money's worth.

I've 100%ed both games, been a DD1 fan since it came out back in 2012.

Imo the first game is better. Maybe it's the fact that I mained ranger and in DD2 ranger loses daggers, has specialty arrows nerfed, and loses a bunch of its movement and bow skills. But DD2 feels like a chore late-game. By the time I 100%ed it I was eager to put it down and uninstall.

DD2 DOES have a better world map, I'll give it that much, but that's the only aspect I'd say is better.

It's more fun because DD2 is inferior in every way except for graphics and even then the graphics are still trash by modern standards. DDDA has hard mode, better performance, better combat, better vocations, better story (still nonsensical), better atmosphere, better monster variety, better characters, better items, better loot and it actually has an endgame.

People say that DD2 has a better map but I don't see how. The map is way bigger, sure but it's empty as ♥♥♥♥ and bland. DDDA has water temple, bandit camps, goblin fort, everfall, catacombs, witchwood etc. What does DD2 have? oh wow grassy terrain and rocky terrain. I can't wait to explore copy and pasted cave #85 so I can find a chest with rotten harspuds and upgrade materials that I already had 99 of, poggers.

I started playing DDDA like 2 weeks ago and I started with DD2 as my first game so it's not a nostalgia thing either. I knew DDDA was the superior game when I could play as a mystic knight and I could actually run the game for more than 2 hours without crashing.

depends on what we talking about.

DD2 combat, exploration, and pawns are wayyy much better. But the when it comes to story, or npcs originality, DDDA wins by a lot.

People keeps forgeting DDDA all pack is not DD1 version.
