http://dragonsdogma.wikia.com/wiki/Dragon's_Ire that's the best bow you can get early at BBI. Dragonforged rusted bow inflicts torpor, quite useful. Good daggers are Heaven's Keys from offline/online Ur-Dragon. Fivefold flurry, luncean sight, harness+kisses for offense, masterful kill or invinsibility for defense.
And yes, BBI is hard.

Dragon's Pain or Vein are generally better than Heaven's Key for BBI (mini) bosses unless you have enough Strength to get 2000 or more total Strength. The main exception being Cursed Dragons due to their weakness to Holy.

^ This. Also having a support mage in the party is recommended (for weapon enchantment, NOT healing). Conqueror's Periapts might help to break through damage threshold.
Skills - Hundred Kisses and Cutting Wind;
Augments - Arm Strength, Opportunism (from BBI novelties) and Adhesion (when you're clinging to an enemy, you're less likely to get hit).
Pawns should either have resistance to sleep, possesion and petrification or you should carry a lot of curatives. And Light-Cure to cure curse and skill stifling for the protagonist.
Also avoiding Necrophages (Elder Ogres, Garms, Death) is preferable, if you can't beat them at the moment.

I'm playing on hard mode, the first time I went there I was lvl 76-78 and couldn't do too much. But if you go to the first courtyard you can farm exp from chimera, cyclops and other lower but deadly monsters when you feel confident you can go deeper through the island.

With that I reached lvl 110 very quickly. Another method is to fight offline UR so you can farm exp (almost 90k) and money (almost 700k x 23 wakestones) selling wakestones. =)
