It's not "similar", it's not "close enough", it's pretty much pure Forgotten Realms' D&D 100%, just with any direct mention of the official setting removed and few minor tweaks here and there to the bestiary.
How did this never dawn on me before?!
Its like they took SoM and made it 3-D with a healthy sprinkling of Monster Hunter.
Too bad mage in Dragon's Dogma didn't get the phase shift skill sorcerer in D&D gets.
Way you no make an open world D&D ToD/SoM game, capcom?!
BTW, here is the game for anyone who never played it in arcades or on PC.
You won't get to see the sorcerer do much until 7:40 because in this game you really have to conserve your spells for the right moments.

In fact an unbelievable amount of stuff today has derived from D&D.
Did you mean in theme or gameplay? Because it certainly doesn't play like it.
