Game has two kinds of saves
1-. Main save. It's an "Ironman save" (you have only one that overwrites itself). You can manually save, and the game will also save at specific points in the game (usually when you make a choice in a quest, or when you load specific maps). You will usually work 99% of the time with this save.
2-. Checkpoint Autosave. Works as a checkpoint. Updates when you sleep at an inn or enter a Rift Stone. You will usually load it via the save menu (Return to last Checkpoint)

Rule #1 of DDDA. Save frequently, even after every single battle, you got something cleared or you abtain an important item or key.
rule #2 of DDDA. EVERY-SINGLE-TIME time you see a Riftstone, ENTER it. Even if you have no plans of switching pawns or "resurrecting" your main (playing solo), you want to force the checkpoint save (also, think of sleeping in any Encampment or location with that service available). Then, if you play solo, grab your pawn and throw him/her off the nearest cliff or something...
At best , what it has is a few clicks faster save , that is still freaking slow compared to your usual F5 save.
That said , this is a console port , what did you expect really lols? We dont even have hotkeys for stuff like the map.
