Crashes on start up?
I decided to polish up on some Dragon's Dogma with the 2nd game coming out in two months but I can't get the game to load. Just crashes on startup before any of the logos or splash screens even pop up. I've tried to reinstall it and validate the files.

Any extra tips people have for me to try getting it to run?

Try running the installer for Vcredist(C++2010) and let it do a repair, can be found in the Steamworks shared folder.

check windows event viewer and also windows reliability history.
might be a game crash event.

go to folder
C:\users\yourWIndowsLogin\appdata\local\capcom\draons dogma dark arisen
and delete or rename or move somewhere else file config.ini
maybe the file is corrupt or has a bad setting
then try the game again

I had tried deleting the .ini file after I made the post. Didn't check the event viewer though so I will do that as I try to run the game again after repairing like raystevens suggested.

edit: event viewer detailed that the fault lies with "nvd3dum.dll"

It just tells me that I already have it installed and does nothing. I'm working on the graphics driver solution.

i have nvidia driver 546.33 on win 11. game works. if we both have the same driver and same game files, maybe problem is elsewhere.

open command window with admin permission. run these commands to check windows system files

sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

If nvd3dum.dll is at fault, i'd try Display Driver Uninstaller like Xenophobe mentioned, and doing a clean install of the Nvidia drivres.

Ran those scans and they both came back clean. Nothing corrupted or missing. I'm also on 546.33 but with Win 10.

edit: just finished a clean reinstall of nvidia drivers. Have to re-download DD:DA since I had pretty much given up on it. Will update when it finishes and I give it a try. Seeing as I crash within 3 seconds of launching the game it should be relatively quick.

edit 2: still crashes immediately, event viewer still labels nvd3dum.dll as the fault.

edit 3: I've tested other games I own that people have said in other forums nvd3dum.dll will cause crashes in. They all opened and ran fine. It's just DD:DA that is having this issue.

I have a new desktop so I fired up my old one that has win 10 on it and the 546.33 driver.
game works on a 750ti. which proves nothing of course. the 750ti does not use/access the newer driver features/upgrades. either try older drivers or report the issue to nvidia. the game devs are probably not going to fix a 2013 game.
nvidia might if enough users report issues.

With Dragon's Dogma 2 on the horizon I don't think they would consider it. Though, there's a slim chance they might want it to work properly for all players, as interest in DD2 might drive purchases for DD:DA in this period of waiting.

You also need winmedia files from windows 7. If it's crashing IMMEDIATELY, this is why. You will need a legacy codec pack and WMP legacy files from win7, these are found on the microsoft store under apps.

So I need windows media player from windows 7? And what is this legacy pack you mean? I have windows media player. What am I missing?

odd. looking in the steam game folder/_Commonredist
all I see is dx june2010 and vcredist 2010.

both are listed here:
https://steamdb.info/app/367500/depots/

did not install any legacy codec pack nor wmp legacy files on my win11 nor win 10 desktops. and the game runs.

perhaps another game installed it. whatever works:

Tried this and a solution from the other forum thread you linked. Did not work. Closes before the game even starts loading.

if it is still crashing with that nv error msg, still looks like it is the driver for whatever card you have. which card is it? maybe someone else has the game running with that card and driver.
