Romance?
So i just finished the game... and ya go down with the guy you kept saving.... Valermo... What's that about ? im confused, since there was literally no setup for this romance to happen.

More like "romance".
There's the extension of Affinity (reputation) system that we call "Beloved system". It boils down to appending the fate of NPC that likes your character the most to the main quest line.

It is both introduced and executed poorly. But not to the point that you have absolutely o clue what happens during the Final Battle - stop skipping cutscenes, I guess.
Uh... Yes, you get the choice to trade the life of the character that likes you the most to not fight Grigori. The only thing im confused about is the romance , that's why i made it clear in the original comment? And the namesake of the topic? Everything else i understand. Weird passive-aggresive comment.

So which is it, finished or not?
I haven't finished the game myself but according to the wikia pages that I've read, I think you got stuck with Valmero as your Beloved because his affinity with your Arisen is the highest among the other NPCs. I maxed out a couple NPCs myself so I'm actually curious to find out who will be my Arisen's beloved on my first playthrough. I am suspecting it'll either be Medeleine or Aelinore since I just cleared Arousing Suspicion recently.
You can also quarantee who's your beloved by doing a side quest and giving the reward as a gift to whoever
Multiple NPC's can have maxed out Affinity with the Arisen; you can tell if their Affinity's maxed out because they'll have a pink aura around them when you talk to them. Grigori chooses the Arisen's Beloved from among that selection of NPC. What cements any of those NPCs as the Beloved is speaking to them just before starting the main quest "Deny Salvation". Whichever of those NPCs is the last one you speak to is the one that Grigori will choose.

Well i guess that makes sense since i did the valermo quest last before going for the grigori fight. I just didn't expect that post credit scene and all. Kinda feels forced. Maybe it makes more sense depending on the NPC, like only 1 choice is cannon and all.

That doesn't guarantee them as Beloved. The only thing that ring does is max out an NPC's Affinity; it's being the last NPC with maxed-out Affinity you talk to before "Deny Salvation" that confers Beloved status.

Oooh!!
Thank you for this new piece of info!
Now I can pick my Beloved for sure.

Ah shoot worked fine on my first play of the game, guess on multiple repeat runs the effect of the ring reduces
One time I played through doing my best to ignore everyone and at the end the Jester was my romance partner....
