Well, if BLACKCAT isn't selling fakes, I can give it to you.
Now I've been punished for my curiosity wanting to know what was in the book.

The game would be great if it didn't troll the player like this.
That would be great. But there is no load checkpoint option. I'm playing on the Switch.

Is there no option under PauseMenu>Save/Quit?
man literally tells you not to open the book
I would never remember that. I'm not using a guide or anything and it took me days to find a lead on the bandits. I rescued a travelling merchant who finally told me where. I had completely forgotten everything the quest giver said by the time I found the book.
If they want you to remember details about the quest they should put it in the quest log.
