it will not work as You think it would. In this way You can only finish the quest not unlock items. But You can also finish quest by giving bronze or silver Idol

You have to give the original to unlock the extended store inventory. Fakes don't work.

caxton gets the almace, a sword with ice damage .madeleine gets kunai, a dagger with dark damage with gold idol.

You don't have to choose. First playthrough, give the gold to Caxton, silver to madaline, 2nd playthrough switch that around, third playthrough give them both bronze, then playthroughs 4, 5 &6 give them both forgeries of each type. Bam, completely unlocked! Realistically though, I wouldn't worry about it if it's just for gear, Bitterblack has way better gear than you can buy, and the gear you get from the story line's final boss is better than store bought gear.

There's only 3 times that I buy from the shopkeeps, initial gear to get started, potent greenwarishes, for when I first get started (then I farm bitterblack for kingwarish, and I only go to the 3rd area where the dude in the fur coat is. If you progress past that he'll make sure you regret it :), you have to delve deeper to find him and rarify stuff. It's easier to just keep him there until you are strong enough to complete Bitterblack), and Fournival for his maker's finger, wakestone shard and conqueror's prepiates to go rape Death's face in Bitterblack. After that, I only use the blacksmith for enhancing, and I use the shopkeep to buy explosive arrows after a certain point in the game. Most of what you can buy at the blacksmith can be found out in the world, for free :)

I gave a Gold Idol to both to have the best of both world... I honestly don't remember how I did that though. The only thing I can think of is a person must have gifted me a Gold Idol somewhere near release day, might have been that considering that happend a lot with all kinds of unique items. goes to show, style/looks > op stats.

depends on what you want. Madalin will only give you a few weapons (i think caxton will also unlock them) but the exclusives are the female only red cloth armor (summer psaro?). Caxton will just give you weapons that are good enough to get you up till mid-late game.

the few female exclusive clothes/armor madeline offers is the sultry/noblewoman set and summary set. it's the red outfit and yellow outfit. the red one is my favorite for my female pawn but the yellow one sucks because it's missing a top, boots AND gloves unlike the red version, it's pretty much incomplete and you can't find alternatives for it. pity.
