Rift stone healing...
I am working my way through Bitterblack and upon repairing a shattered rift stone, my Pawn remarked with relief that we could now use it to heal...

How exactly?

Using it, it just does what a rift stone normally does and takes me to the Pawn dimension. When I return, I am still just as injured as when I left. Is my Pawn a liar or is there some way to make a rift stone heal you?

It heals your pawns, not you.

It will clear all detrimental status effects from the entire party if you enter, in addition to fully restoring the health and stamina of your pawns.

If the Arisen stands close to a rift stone, the green aura of Anodyne will appear on all your pawns no matter how far away they actually are from the stone; unlike the Mage spell, the Rift's anodyne version will restore both the grey and white areas of their health.
