Monsters taking a long long time to kill
I like this game however get annoyed when I run into a monster that takes half an hour to kill, eg a Troll, Centaur etc. I'm playing a rogue / strider, around level 20 at the moment.

Am I doing something wrong or is this normal?

On a side note, I've been unable to locate any other towns besides the main city. Exploring to the west at the moment... keep getting interrupted by night time :(

There are only two towns; Cassardis and Gran Soren (yay for diversity). However, there are a few other merchants spread around the world map. One in the quary (after finishing Of Monsters and Merchants), one at a rest camp in devil's fire grove (just outside the rear entrance to the quary). And another at The Great Wall Encampment. Each carries a different assortment of goods that are tailored towards certain types of vocations. These are often great for finding gear that is better than what Caxton sells (since he mostly just sells weapons).

On the note of the monster difficulty, depending on your difficulty level (easy, normal, hard) you'll find certain monsters that are intended to as as mini-bosses. Some of these are optional (like what you find in the wilderness) while others are manditory (like the ogre's in the quary needed to finish the quest there). On normal mode, at around level 20, an ogre in the quary would still be a difficult and long fight with the gear available at that early part in the game. Even with great team composition, those fights are both dangerious and tedious (unless they run themselves into a bunch of explosive barrles). You won't find an Centuars though. Just know that all fights are not going to be easy and are intended to take time, patience, and skill (especialy on hard mode from level 1).
Wait until you run into the Dragonkin.

I've sunk a half hour on one of the weakest (Devil's Fire Grove drake) and lost with him at one health bar. Multiple times.

Pro tip: If you can find them, Wakestones are a must for big fights. However, they only really get common in the Everfall.

Gear makes a big difference, but there are a few ways to make fights easier.
  • Make use of cliffs, sometimes you can knock enemies off of high ledges and let that get the kill for you (but you'll probably miss out on the loot).
  • Target weakspots, typically heads and any glowy bits on the enemy. Knowledgeable pawns might assist you with this.
  • Use attacks the enemy is vulnerable to. E.g. cyclops are vulnerable to lightning, the red drakes are vulnerable to ice.
  • Use explosive barrels and consumables like special arrows.
  • Use periaphs that boost damage.

Enjoy the fights that take 30 minutes while it lasts. While in this case you are probably limited due to equipment, once you get some levels and figure out how to kill things, much of the fun of fighting large enemies goes away.

Special emphasis on the plural S. Get more than one together (preferable with utilitarian inclinations) and watch the death rain from the sky.
Blast arrows, just find a perch and keep shooting things in the weak spot - hearts for dragons, eyes for cyclops, tails for saurians, medals for golem, head shots for just about everything else. Blast arrows make everything quick and relatively painless. Take loads.

Run, Look for openings, Climb, Stabby, Run, Repeat.
It tends to work. Think Dark Souls but easier and way more forgiving. And, not really.

Every monster has weak areas that take time to figure out. Its part of the fun. Also, once your pawn learns it, they will be more useful at big monster takedowns.

When you reach level 30 in normal mode, you will be fine with most field encounters.
