Death sucks
And no I'm not talking about dying. I'm talking about the actual enemy. One hit and he kills you instantly. And you'd think that's not a problem, his attacks are slow and easy to dodge. And you'd be right. But your pawns are too stupid to get out of the way, and when he kills them there's no chance for revival. You've got to go all the way back to the riftstone to get new ones. And then when you go back, he just kills them too. And it's not like you can really fight him, because when he gets low he just runs off. But don't worry, he'll show up again to kill your pawns next time you return.

I hate this thing. It's super frustrating to deal with. It's gotten to the point where I don't even try to fight it, I just run. And I still have to reset half the time because he catches one of my stupid pawns. Having to quit and reload constantly isn't particularly fun, but it's either that or trek back to the riftstone. Either way I have to keep repeating the same song and dance routine.

death will go away when you take One point of Health (full bar) from him, You only get a chance to take one point on each encounter. i try to lour him into a tight spot and spam ricochet with the magic bow, get tne health bar from him and he runs away,. Always spam the "COME" command to keep pawns from attacking.

I do spam that but my pawns don't listen.

Yep sometimes they just have a death wish . lol i guess thats the best words for it :) b4 entering any room, shout for help, if you have a mage with holy , then it will cast it on 2 of you, shot help again for the mage to do all 4 of you , then enter already buffed, prefferibly with holy. spam blast arrow or rocochet on death and if he falls over , give the go command. its try and error, save scum works too.

Hints, in bbi, your pawns NEED 100% sleep, possession, petrify , and silence protection, or as high as possible, anything ells is a bonus. dont wory about elements like fire ice etc, they wont kill you as quick as the others will.

1. Command spam doesn't work. If the Pawns don't listen the first time then you may as well stop.
2. And I mean doesn't work with your particular goal in mind. Overall Pawns will react to every command, just not necessarily the way you want, eg thay may swap to a different spell cast or tell you to bugger off. IOW Command spam confuses your Pawns.
3. Also, some Pawns are too obsessed with their priorities, eg uberaggreessive Scather, that you will have a hard time calling them back to you. One thing however works on every, no matter how stubborn, Pawn, and that's not giving a crap. If Come! alone doesn't work just turn away, make few steps, eventually start running, don't turn back.
Show them that you don't give a ♥♥♥♥.

BTW I wouldn't advise assembling a party at your side with Death around though. Not if you are a ranged vocation at least. Better gain Death's attention by attacking it and drag it off your Pawns. And that's only provided you intend on fighting it. Otherwise, use a Come! command and leave the area at once.

The point of Death IS for you to run - in my opinion. He appears right at the start of BBI to let you know that some things in there are going to wreck your ♥♥♥♥. The best way to deal with him is to run (often times back to the area you came from), unless you're specifically trying to hunt him.

Sometimes simply facing away from where the pawns are and taking one or two steps as you give the come command will cause them to disengage and respond to the order.

The first purpose of death is to check if you understand and can use efficiently the most important mechanic in DDDA: knock down.
His second purpose is to make you save your periapts and blast arrows for him instead of abusing them on every ennemies.
His third purpose is to encourage you to keep your encumberement low, since you cant iframe or block his scythe swing, you need enough mobility to be able to avoid it.
Optionally it can help you kill other ennemies around, since his scythe swing and sleep spell deal friendly fire.

Then I guess the purpose of pawns is to encourage you to repair the broken rift stones in BBi, so you dont have to go back to retrieve them...

But the general trick to avoid having your pawns killed by Death is simply to take agro on Death and then run away from your pawns when he prepares his scythe swing. It's even easier to do if your pawns are asleep because of Death's spell....

Is it just me or does Death seems more of a final boss then The Dragon or Damien?

Death is that optional superboss you find in lots of RPGs. First one that comes to mind is the Omega Weapon in FF8. Definitely harder than the other bosses, but if you know how to cheese it, not too challenging.

I's say run no the nearest exit end re-enter to despawn him until you're strong enough to deplete at least 1 hp bar during his first sleep cast. If someone is injured or debilitated he will likely use scythe straight away.

with cheat engine, you can avoid this stupid mechanic

Learn the game enough and death is just another sack of mud collapsing at your feet.
Mystic knight owns death, so does a ranger .
