I do spam that but my pawns don't listen.
2. And I mean doesn't work with your particular goal in mind. Overall Pawns will react to every command, just not necessarily the way you want, eg thay may swap to a different spell cast or tell you to bugger off. IOW Command spam confuses your Pawns.
3. Also, some Pawns are too obsessed with their priorities, eg uberaggreessive Scather, that you will have a hard time calling them back to you. One thing however works on every, no matter how stubborn, Pawn, and that's not giving a crap. If Come! alone doesn't work just turn away, make few steps, eventually start running, don't turn back.
Show them that you don't give a ♥♥♥♥.
BTW I wouldn't advise assembling a party at your side with Death around though. Not if you are a ranged vocation at least. Better gain Death's attention by attacking it and drag it off your Pawns. And that's only provided you intend on fighting it. Otherwise, use a Come! command and leave the area at once.
His second purpose is to make you save your periapts and blast arrows for him instead of abusing them on every ennemies.
His third purpose is to encourage you to keep your encumberement low, since you cant iframe or block his scythe swing, you need enough mobility to be able to avoid it.
Optionally it can help you kill other ennemies around, since his scythe swing and sleep spell deal friendly fire.
Then I guess the purpose of pawns is to encourage you to repair the broken rift stones in BBi, so you dont have to go back to retrieve them...
But the general trick to avoid having your pawns killed by Death is simply to take agro on Death and then run away from your pawns when he prepares his scythe swing. It's even easier to do if your pawns are asleep because of Death's spell....
Mystic knight owns death, so does a ranger .
