On game controllers it's the directionnal pad/cross, which give you 4 shortcuts (and maybe some other button can be assigned as shortcuts, not sure), on PC it's the numerical keys 1 to 6.
You can do without... unless you're playing a yellow vocation and want to use the instant-lantern-switch-trick with instant reset, which require having the lantern on a shortcut.
unfortunately, the option to "qickslot item" doesnt show up when im using the ps4 controller. if im using mouse and keyboard i can easily qickslot items with the steps you provided..
thanks for your sarcasm. that really helped me out here.
Hi there...I actually re-created the actual PS4 controller settings for the game wherein you press both shoulder buttons, then press UP, RIGHT, DOWN, or LEFT to access items in your inventory. I posted the setup in the controller configs for the game. I do not use ds4 at all, I simply have my controller wired to my usb port on my case.

Changes are saved. To use once in the game: press both shoulder buttons to activate the “mode” (not the quick press like on console) and use hot keyed item.
I found I had to briefly press both shoulder buttons again for whatever reason, to get out of the mode. But it works and it’s better than trying to click on keyboard while fighting an enemy at the same time.
Probably because I spent years on console playing the game—I admit it. 🤷♀️
