edit: most likely you still will need to go into proper stage of the game for a specific item, i am not sure about that.
You can use any of the 3 Idols to finish the quests(Idol Worship and Supplier's Demand).
More information You can find here: http://dragonsdogma.wikia.com/wiki/Bronze_Idol
P.S. It was long time ago since I played and read all this so do not eat me if I am mistaken.
And don't forget that Idols give shop discount, useful early on.
Gold unlock silver and bronze items too.
give to caxton if you are male and/or are a warrior/fighter
You find the same or better stuff by exploring the latter game areas although a few things are only available through giving the gold idol to whichever
Never bother with bronze at all. When the time comes on your FIRST playthrough, first and foremost get a forgery made of the gold idol to keep in your inventory permanently for the vendor discount!! Then give the genuine gold idol to either Caxton or Madeleine, depending on whose gear most appeals to you at the time. Maddy has some assassin/strider stuff and some female only stuff that Cax doesn't carry, while Cax has some heavy gear for fighters, warriors and MK's. Anyway, whichever of them does NOT get the gold idol should be given the silver one.
On your next playthrough you can give the gold idol to whomever got silver the first time around and just ignore the other one, since they will already have their inventory upgraded from before. You also won't have to bother making another forgery, since you will still have the forgery you made the first time.
This, basically.
Keep in mind that on NG+, their gold stuff is really kind of pointless, aside from Mad's Ring of Ruby for the 25 % fire resist. Cax's weapons will all be outdone by the post-game gear any way. It really doesn't matter much aside from your first playthrough, where the extra gear can be useful.
