There's actually two blacksmiths in Gran Soren. The one you're talking about is just a quest-giver whose quest introduces you to the concept of Wakestones. The one who actually buys/sells stuff is Caxton, and his shop is in the main square; it's to the northwest of the fountain.

Ah, I thought it used the traditional meaning. Must have been the game's overuse of fake "Olde" English that confused me.
