1. Hand them items via your personal inventory. This means you can always rifle their pockets for stuff when needed. All items held by a rented pawn are automatically deposited in your storage if they return to the Rift for any reason (death or dismissal).
2. Equip armor or weapons on them via the Equipment screen. This is a permanent gift to the player who runs that pawn, and if the pawn is dismissed or dies, the equipment is waiting for the other player to accept once they retrieve their rents. If you immediately re-rent that pawn, the equipment you gave them will not be on their person as only the pawn's creator can make permanent changes to its appearance/equipment. This prevents pawn griefing.
As stated above: everything a Support Pawn carries for you lands at the store when it get's released/returned to the Rift. This is actually a pretty good way to quickly rid of excess items - just don't kill on-line Pawns as this'll give their owners mediorce ratings.
also, if im online and playing, my main pawn cant be used by other players?
2: if your connectivity is set to online your pawn can be used by other players, if offline no one can use your pawn
If you are offline, then resting doesn't update your pawn, however, your pawn's current uploaded version is still available to other players. There is a permission setting in Options, that determines pawn privacy, which can be set to Everyone, Friends Only or Private. No one can see/rent a Private pawn, regardless of offline or online status in its own game.
What I like to do is rent my pawns and then go offline. This means I don't have to wait through the longer loading screen every time I rest. When it's time to replace my rented pawns, I switch to online, do my Rift business and go offline again.
Anything the other pawn is carrying, when they die or you fire them will go back into your storage box at the inn.
Anything the other pawn is carrying (just like your pawn) that can be eaten or thrown, they might eat or throw during combat. This includes herbs, potions, wine, fruit, stones, skulls, etc.
Equipment the other pawn COMES WITH stays with them, you cannot "steal" it.
You may change the other pawn's equipment but when you fire them you don't get it back, and they don't keep it either... it just vanishes into the rift I guess.
It is a good idea to give each pawn a lantern and a pickaxe. They will automatically use them when the time is right, and pawn's lanterns never go empty so they have no need to refuel with morroe oil.
When you fire a pawn (not when they die) IF they are another player's pawn and not a system-built one, you will have the option to give them a gift from your inventory which they will bring back to their master. Also you can include a brief note for their master to read, choose from one of several pre-written ones.
2. Pawns don't need lanterns, it's a cosmetic for those, and they don't even light up much area. And there may be some problems with Pawns lighting their doused lanterns instead fighting or following the party, but that's around water only. Pick is a similar issue - if one does mining expedition, to Ancient Quarry fi, it may be worth it, otherwise unnecessary distraction and waste of inventory space (Pawns prioritize gathering trash anyway, no need for more).
