If by "solo" you mean "Autonomy" Augment then just as the description says, "when you venture forth alone". And only then (btw Dying Pawn count as no Pawns).

As for getting rid of your Pawn. I see you've been playing carefuly as dying Pawn didn't occur to you?
Make your Pawn mortally injured during fight and just don't help it and you'll get rid of it (untill you touch the Riftstone).
Other method would be "to Brine" it ti grabbing it and throwing to deep water.

The cliff by the encampment is a popular place for pawn sky diving attempts (without a parachute). BBI harbour is also handy for pawnicide.

im assuming i shouldnt bother with this until i get autonomy?
Depends on if you enjoy playing with your pawn by your side, all the time, killing everything and leaving you to pick up the spoils. When you decide you actually feel like playing the game, that is a good time to let your pawn die. :)
Another tip for using pawns is one quick and easy method to deposit anything you want at a moment's notice to storehouse if you're near a riftstone.

Dump the stuff you want stored in your pawn's inventory, preferably your primary pawn, then toss them into the sea or an endless pit. They'll die, and everything they carried will be transferred to storage.

Then resummon, bam, everything stored away.

It doesn't work with the Main Pawn.
But hey, everyone "hired" Rook at some point, right? ;)
