Report a translation problem
There is no wrong path in the sense that TC can either give the tome to Stefan, or not, with impunity. There’s alternative dialogue for Stefan towards the end of the quest depending on which one happened.
If you don’t want Stefan’s help, then keep the tome and give him a forgery.
Personally, I don't do escort quests because I don't want all of Gransys to like me that much. It's more difficult to manipulate who becomes one's beloved then. IMO, the only reason to do an escort quest is if you DO want that person to like you a lot, and/or you want the specific item from the escort quest's reward.
Ser Berne's greatsword, Griffic Victory, and Clarus' archistave, Keen Dragon's Wit, are just about the only things I want from those quests.

i almost always forget at least one.
I am getting ready to do another run but this time i have to swap out pawns to get them knowledge they missed in their first run, like observing the boulder in dripstone cave before it is removed, etc.
