If a pawn dies, anything they were carrying gets put in your storage. So not to worry, none of your items were actually lost.
You should be able to re-recruit Rook, if you really want to. Any pawn that dies can be rehired at a rift stone. If your main pawn dies, they automatically reappear as soon as you touch a rift stone.
And also, in water locations pawns tend to feed the Brine by jumping into the water.
But that's all just for show, these are the Pawns acting as filler for the Rift "lobby". You can search for and pick among thousands of Pawns in the Rift, of many Vocations, levels and setups.
2. Generally if your Pawns lose all the HP they become unconscious and you have certain time to "Help" them...buuut there are enemies that can kill your party members permanently, or even turn them against you!
Ghastly enemies for instance have this life draining possession attack that ends up literally dragging their victim to underworld if you will allow it to kill a Pawn. Make sure you free possessed Pawns or you will lose them.
