I found a couple other sources of lore:
1. Mod for Homeworld 2 called "Angels Fall First: Naval Combat Operations". ~2005
Video of the mod. This mod is definitley from the same universe as the game, the ships are identical.
What's interesting is that the mod was discontinued around the same time that this game started development.
2. Standalone MMORTS(?) called "AFF: Second Antarean War" (or AFF2AW). Never left alpha it seems.
This image and this image should ring some bells.
The official website for AFF2AW was launched ~2008, around the same time that this game started development. Last update to AFF2AW was around 2013 it seems, website is down too. Safe to say that game is dead.
3. Seems this game was an Unreal Tournament 3 mod called "AFF: Planetstorm" originally.
It took home a bunch of awards from an Unreal modding contest, based on a GDM March 2009 magazine[archive.org]. Funny, the article in the Septmeber 2009 version of the magazine claims that the mod was to be completed by October 2009, 6 years before it's Steam Early Access release.
EDIT: I found a video of AFF2AW, but the quality is absolute garbage. Still, you can sorta make out some of the ships.
EDIT 2: Since AFF2AW and AFF started development around the same time (2008), that probably means that there are 2 different teams working on each game. So I don't think that AFF2AW being abandoned so early in development is cause for concern in terms of this game, but who knows.
This is official wiki: http://wiki.strangelyinteractive.com/index.php/Main_Page Should be still valid for lore, ignore any stats or weapon specifications since it's not up to date.

I dont even remember where I found it.
Not sure tbh haha I cant even remember where I found the map. I think it was on DeviantArt somewhere.
but yeah gameplay comes first then maybe devs will start cleaning/adjusting lore to fit.
I believe that you can find that map, or a slightly more vague version of it in the briefing room of each side before a match, I know theres one up on the wall in the ULA briefing room.
Yes. The one I posted above is essentially a blown up/higher detail version of the map in the briefing room.
