It's a large-scale Battlefield-esque game where you can set up your gear and equipment on your infantry-type, setup your vehicles and fly/drive/stomp them around, generally hopping in and out of them freely, control destroyers and larger fighter-carrying space cruisers and/or run around their interiors to repair subsystems, control individual weapon emplacements, and repel boarders while on the opposite end you can board enemy starships to sabotage them from the inside.
The game features AI bots to fill in for players, has LAN capability, is practically a complete game as it is, though the developers are still working on it (got a complete UI revamp recently, for instance) and adding new things to it (new maps, vehicles, etc.), and is generally fun and enjoyable if you like large-scale battles on ground and space.
Also, if you were to compare the game with other recent sci-fi games of a similar stripe, you'll get more bang for your buck in this game than you will with, say, EA's Battlefront, which charged triple-A price for maybe a quarter or less of this game's content, not counting DLCs that added maps no one even plays, and with no way to play most of that content without the full amount of players Battlefront requires and is missing as it has no AI, unlike AFF here, to fill in spaces.
You could do worse with the amount of this game's affordable pricetag, and even with Battlefront's recent price-drop this game's still by far the better product, with a team that has remained dedicated to fixing it up, smoothing it out, and making it more presentable since long before it became an Early Access title.
The only potential negative is the low player count, which is attributed to the devs not wishing to actively promote the game till it's closer to a final release so as not to scare away players who, for instance, didn't stick with the game due to the old and more confusing UI, which was recently replaced. Granted, after waiting forever to get into a specific game mode in similar games like Battlefront, at least you can get games in AFF going with a smaller amount of people utilizing bots. Players seem to more actively play online here during the weekends, using the discord channel or such to get together.
I personally use games like this for LAN parties, which is why I love the use of bots, as it's hard to get the full amount of people fitting into a living room in the first place, and I've been following AFF since it started life as a Homeworld 2 mod when that game was still fresh, so you shouldn't have to worry about them dropping support for a long time.
Also the incurision mode is basically attack/defense while territories is the traditional "capture the command post" mode.
There are no giant titan things to fight against, but that is replaced with the ability to have capital ship space battles with the ability to command and pilot the capital ship and move throughout it. In addition to destroyers, corvettes and battleships.
You can also take a dropship and attempt to board the enemy ship and destroy it from the inside (similar to Battlefront, except that you can actually destroy the ship and cause it to explode).
There is a slight adrenaline rush when your ship is about to explode and you're high tailing it to the hanger to escape.
Exactly this... minus the star wars theme (which since disney brought and has started to milk it with quick money grabbing productions its a worthless product).
