Language support
IMO it would be great if both WU and WO would support translating the interface for players who don't know English.

This is hard coded into the game. That is, translating the game isn't as simple as changing a single file, but changing the code. This is not a feature request on the high prioty list currently from what I have read.

Ah, I see. I could probably write necessary code if I'm given access to it, for free* as I have helped localize several programs made by my friends, some written in Java.

*meaning 2 free copies of WU to give to my buddies.

If you wanted to make a language mod, it would just be a matter of decompiling each file, changing the language and recompiling it. I know I made that sound simpler than it is, but if you are experienced with it, should not be too bad. Just tedious.

Yes, but I want to do this "legally" and frankly, dealing with decompiled code isn't fun, I'd rather have access to commented, proper version of code so I can hook up my localization functions which in turn would make language packs easier (no need to decompile, just edit few text files).

Wurm is not going to do anything more than release the software, If you want to do mods you will have to dig through it and do it. They have already stated they are not going to support modding, but it is perfectly "legal" to mod.

Darkhog, ive read several threads on these forums, where youre offering to help, for free copies of WU. im not any kind of mod, nor in any way affiliated with anyone on the team. having said that, i strongly suggest you do some research re: the history of wurm, specifically reguarding rolf, and his fanatical reluctance to release anything, to anyone.

in short, youre barking up the wrong tree, m8. besides, wurm has been around for yeeeeears, and i sincerely doubt youre the first person who has offered to "assist". if they had wanted it done, it could have and would have been done by now.

tell your 2 friends to buy WU and support the game. again, jmho

From the official FAQ:

Will you be providing an API for localization and customization?

Afraid not, since most language stuff is hard coded. If we can hire more people we might be able to put someone on externalizing strings and support more languages but realtime generated strings involving plural, possessive 's and pronouns also need code changes so it's a real hassle.

Guess what? I'm ready to work on localization stuff and I don't even want that much in return.
