A server for this install is already running
so i started a lan server last night for me and my friend to play on, but when i try to play singleplayer it gives me the message that a server for this install is already running, even when i have shut off the server. i even looked in the task manager and it is not running at all, but i still can't play or generate a singleplayer world. Please help.

That's pretty weird. Are you sure there is no 'colonyserver.exe' running?

I assume this has fixed itself somewhere the last 19 hours though. If it hasn't, try deleting "colony survival/gamedata/savegames/serverLock"

A few hours after I posted, it still hadn't fixed itself. I uninstalled and reinstalled the game completely. After I did that I could play singleplayer fine, however after hosting a server again the issue reappears, and i can't play singleplayer.

Furthermore, it seems that when i first stop hosting my server, it is in the task manager, however when i try to end the task, it doesn't work. I am able to end any other program in the task manager, but not colonyserver, it just doesn't stop running. I tried restarting my computer and it dissapears appear in my task manager, however it seems to still be running somehow, as i cannot delete the serverLock file.

It appears that when i try to delete the serverLock file, it says it is already in use in colonyserver, even though colonyserver is not in my task manager.

Okay, that's pretty annoying. Can you send us the server log file via one of the methods described in the "tips to reporting" sticky?

I'm having this issue. I have never played the game and i'm completely unable to play.

Attempting to start singleplayer: "A server for this install is already running. It may still be quitting. Will retry in x seconds" .... These seconds keep going up for about 5 or more minutes and then it exits itself back to the main screen and repeats the process.

Attempting to start "Host Co-Op": Failed to setup a connection. Returning to main menu in 5 seconds

Attempting to start "Multiplayer": They just load for a few seconds and then cancel. I've tried every server I can see. Some are whitelisted and have passwords but i cant seem to join the ones that say "Connection Successful" either?`

I've been looking through some old discussions about this, but i haven't seen anyone receive a solution. I made a discussion about it yesterday but haven't gotten a reply. I've tried uninstalling completely, removing all the files. I've tried deleting the server lock. Unsure what else to do lol :steammocking:

Could be an antivirus program blocking the client from starting/writing/loading some stuff. So if you're running any such program (outside of windows defender), try adding it to the exceptions there, or maybe run the game as administrator and see if that helps.

If this isn't the case, there should be client logs at "colony survival/gamedata/logs/client/", find one and mail it to contact at colonysurvival.nl or via the discord server. Or upload it somewhere and link it here (but that's less private).

Hey Thank you for replying, I was afraid I was out of luck! I'm using an up-to-date Mac air. My firewall is not turned on though. Do you have any advice for a Mac user? I'll dm you on discord once i find out what the discord is ( I probably looked past it on the forums somewhere haha, ill search for it)

Via discord - could be an issue with OSX and external exFAT volumes, giving permission issues for the game writing to its directory.

issue was resolved, Zun helped me through discord (Thank you again Zun!). For anyone having this issue in the future:

Refer to Zun's reply above. I'm a mac user who was using an external volume which caused permissions issues for the game. Uninstalling the game, and re-instlaling it onto my actual computer ended up resolving the issue
