There is such a thing as too many guards. Guards cost 1 food every day.
Traps are great because they don't require maintenance. They makes them perfect for backup defenses because you can stack huge numbers of traps and not have to upkeep the extra defense. The drawback is that trap ammo is more expensive than guard ammo, so it is better to have guards as your primary damage dealer.
With the new unit, the crossbow, I am able to defend my part 1 maze with part 2 disconnect and keep they form entering the maze so they is indeed a big help
Do any one know how the projectile trap works? Who do it attack?
Never mind on the siege mode going on and off repeatedly, aRPeaR have answered that I believe.

The only issue with underground though, is it takes more time to build and is very close quarters unless you expanded farther.
One time I did a trench type thing around my settlement, it was fun but really ♥♥♥♥♥♥.
Sky bases work, but remove any sense of realism.
Oil Rig type things work and are interesting.
Japanese Castle Designs are by-far the most interesting I have done ingame. Works really well too (considering you change some things up).
