I tend to use 3x3, buts thats me

I use a 3x7. It's optimised for max size and max output. and is as small as you can get it for 8 chicken per a farmer. Also means you need more barley per a farmer too. I have 8, 10 x 10 barley farms and it barely keeps up with the demand. It's probably like 4 barley farms per a farmer this way. I'm guessing haven't actually found a good layout.
