Other colonists radiate negative happiness to simulate overcrowding. Dirt and rock floors/walls radiate negative. Planks less negative. Coated planks a little positive. Carpet positive. Window positive. Decor items and furniture radiate positive. Candles could be a decor item.
I wouldn't want to burden the devs with all this. This could be done by modders if they changed it so modds had more control of the engine.
If I could, I would have temperature of the air and weather so you would need heating.
I'd prefer a system that rewards creativity rather than punishes expediency. So you can pack you colonists like sardines in the early game without penalty, but as you get into the later stages of the game you're incentivised to go back and make living spaces more habitable.
