(For wheat and flax farms i use 11x9 so all the farms have one side with a length of 9 tiles...)
Wheat and Flax, short answer 10x10.
Long answer - Wheat and Flax are single tile, so it's purely down the number of tiles you can get, which caps at 100 (any shape that covers 100 or less - and is above the minimum length on both sides - will be placeable, any shape that contains over 100 tiles will say area too big).Since the farmers can harvest the full 100 tiles (including replanting them) in a single day, the shape is irrelevant to the efficiency, the only thing that might cause a problem is walking distance to a storage and/or time lost in the morning getting from bed to farm.
Basically, if you see a farm ready to harvest in the morning and freshly replanted by night, it can't be made any more efficient. Any improvements to the farmers efficiency just lead to him standing in the farm idle after replanting it.
How you describe berry bushes is counter-intuitive, btw. But, good to know that I can border my 10x10 farms by 4 5x5 farms
What I've been doing is making the farms as small as possible, then blocking all but two of the places berry bushes would go with leaf blocks. That way the farmer will stand between the two bushes and harvest them one after the other, if you then put a crate next to him, then he'll not have to move at all.
Is this true of other farmer types?
