Leaked roadmap from all actually planned versions:

TSW 7 in September 2026: Circuit breakers in the machine room of the Traxx locos (BR 145-147, BR 185-187) will get more details (if you can manage to open the machine room doors...)
TSW 8 in September 2027: Steam Cloud saves. Cross platform cloud saves possible, you need a DTG Live account then (yes, the DTG Live account makes now sense!).
TSW 9 in September 2028: Signal aspects "Hp0 + Sh1", "Hp0 + Zs1" and "Hp0 + Zs7" are triggering now the 500 and 2000 Hz magnets.
TSW 10 in September 2029: EBuLa is working now... partially.
TSW 11 in September 2030: EBuLa is working now... finally. Also on old "compatible" routes.
TSW 12 in September 2031: Correct physics for southern hemisphere added, Australian trains shouldn't drive upside down with the ground and tracks above. First Australian DLC will be announced.

Next Steam sale should be from 29. September to 6. October but it would make me wonder if TSW 6 would be on sale because it's a brand new release.
But it might be a chance to get TSW 5 Special Edition (or whatever) for cheap before it will be removed from shop.

Edit: DTG is greedy, the Deluxe / Special editions of TSW 5 aren't discounted, only the small editions.

The choice is entirely yours of course, but I'd recommend grabbing that free edition even if you won't install it straight away. At least you'd then have the free upgrade path available should you suddenly need it (updates to content you already have, remasters etc.). Also, there's no need to install your DLC collection all at one go.

Ebula? I doubt they will ever add any useful features.

My guess is:
TSW7: Cats and dogs will be added
TSW8: In conducter mode you can call the police
TSW9: Cleaning mode in which you can collect waste
TSW10: In conductor mode you must help elderly people get off the train
TSW11: Caretaker mode for train stations

I do. They are here purely to put off any potential buyers of TSW so that they will look at other programs which I will purposely not name. Maybe they get paid to put out this rubbish, who knows?
