Blender

Blender

hot damn is this not anything like SFM
I long been aware that Blender can do everything SFM does a million times better but bloody hell do I not know how to do a damn thing. Can't even properly import models from smutbase lmao

Yeah, SFM is only focused on animation and movie/poster making. Blender on the other end is more focused on modelling, sculpting, compositing, CGI and of course, animation. However you cannot just open a map place a character and start animating (except if you can find and download already rigged and textures modeled. In this case you can just import them and start animating.)

I have made only few attempts to do what I do in SFM in blender. As Blender is a 64 bit program with much better (and quite easier) lighting tools. Things near impossible on SFM. I never even found out how to even access Source Film Maker 2 and unsure if you can even use Source 1 stuff there!

Yeah, SFM2 is cool but I could access it only thanks to S&BOX early access I got with their developer program. However it was buggy as hell nad I didn't experiment much with it, but importing Source assets into Source² doesn't seem to complicated with the tools Valve and Facepunch have included inside the Source² SDK.
But still, Blender is way more powerful in any case (because you have more freedom, which means more complexity at the beginning.)

I have Half Life Alyx but have absolutely no idea where that program even is lmao

Well I'm not really sure for HF:A but you may find the sdk under the bin directory of the game's folder in you steamapps/common library If Valve didn't change the folder hierarchy too much. But as I don't have HL:A (I don't have a VR headset), I don't if they followed the same hierarchy as Source games

EDIT: you can follow this page to learn about Source² authoring kit and SFM² (also, there is a steam forum dedicated to it)

What I don't get it why Source 2 film maker is not just on the store page like the original is.

:conwayshrug: probably because Source² is not really finished and still in production (well, it's complicated)

Blender is more on the production-side area. Indeed it does what SFM a million times better, but in exchange for that, the learning curve for the program is absolutely steep.

However, you really don't have to learn each and every single one of what it has to offer. If you're here for posters and the likes, you can do exactly what you do with SFM (lighting, composition, posing, etc.). Why learn modelling that's not your main motive, anways? Consider Blender as a bag of Pic-A; everything is stuffed into one bag - you're free to eat which chips you want and ignore the rest for the others.

For this kind of models, knowing the Smutbase`s, ahem, structure, you should first download a .blend file and texture folder into your PC`s (somewhere, you choose) folder, then open blender, top-left corner -> Open -> .blend file you downloaded. I was starting with Blender with that kind of uhh.. hobby? But then the more you know Blender, the more ways you can use for your own enjoyment. Have fun!

You can use the source.io addon to import source engine assets with minimal trouble. 9/10 they come in with no issues.

Learning to port, pose, decorate, and light the environment are the main things im looking for. Maybe even edit an existing model for something more advanced (blood n such)

You can do all that with Blender. It might be a little confusing or even frustrating in the beginning but once you get the hang of it it's just insane fun. :steamsunny:
