"opening" is probably not possible, so what you are looking at is "importing". im pressed for time so i cant check it out but try googling for how to import .mdl files in blender. most likely you will need an addon to do so.

if it is a Valve binary .mdl file, it has to be compile into its SMD source file format. you can do this using a Decompiler called Crowbar. Once it is in SMD format, you will require the Blender Plugin call Blender Source Tools to import the SMD files into Blender...

This playlist shows how to decompile, import, export, write a qc and recompile a simple Valve binary .mdl file, skin it and get it into SFM.

If the .mdl file is not a Valve model, then you have to find a decompiler that will convert the model to a format that is importable to Blender or a Blender Plugin that will import the file in question.

Yep Pte jack is right, you will need to decompile the .mdl file using something like Crowbar http://steamcommunity.com/groups/CrowbarTool wich will create all the .smd files and animation then you will also need the source addon http://steamreview.org/BlenderSourceTools/ so you can import the smd's into blender.

There is, but it doesn't work at all. I keep getting error messages when I try importing .mdl files through it.

.mdl is a source engine file you can use tools such as blenders "source tools" http://steamreview.org/BlenderSourceTools/ to convert (decompile) the .mdl into a dmx or smd file to import into blender

Doesnt even show me my .mdl files
+Rusty+ 12 MAY 2020 a las 17:09
Like i mentioned above, mdl files are used by the source engine
if you mean blender or any other 3d app isnt showing your .mdl they wont
you need to decompile/convert (using most commonly "crowbar" https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=791755353 ) then import it with an smd or dmx file.

I also want to view model files with the extension ".mdl" in Blender, but in this thread I found that ".mdl model files for Steam games can be decompiled with Crowber, and then created as .smd using Blender's add-on. I understand that "load the model file", but I cannot decompile the .mdl model file of the game I want to view using Crowber.
When I searched for an add-on that would allow me to read .mdl model files, I found an add-on named after the game's title.
Does this mean that each game requires its own add-on?

Hey, .mdl files are a format used within source engine games..
"but I cannot decompile the .mdl model file of the game I want to view using Crowbar"
why not? .. what is the error you are having when trying to do so??
"Does this mean that each game requires its own add-on?"
no Crowbar is a tool made for decompiling/compiling and to help aid in (specifically) source engine games..
if you could explain more.. what game is it? what error are you having when trying to decompile? etc..
