How do I open blender file so steam recognize blender as launched?
I want to open any .blend file directly through double click but with steam registering blender app as running so I can see how many hours I was using blender. Is it possible? Right now I need to launch blender through steam and open files from blender app for steam to recognize it's running.

Problem you have here is that when Blender updates, you may lose connectivity to Blend files being opened, then again, may be not because the blender.exe file is being completely replaced and is in the same location.

But to do what you want to do it's the same process as any other file you want to open a program automatically.

1. Right Click the .blend file and select Open With.
2. in the pop up, scroll down to the bottom of the presented programs and select, "Choose another app" (Even if Blender is present in the List).
3. In the "How do you want to Open this File" pop up.

a. If Blender is present AND it links to the version you want to use, select it THEN select the "Always use this program to open .blend files" box. That should associate .blend file to that version of Blender.

b. If Blender isn't present in the the listed programs, scroll to the bottom of the list. Select "More Apps" Scroll through the presented list. If the version of Blender is there, select it and select the "Always Open" box.

c. If Blender isn't in the list, scroll to the bottom of the list,
Select the "Always Open" box,
Select "Look for another app on my PC",
Point the file browser to where you have the Steam version of Blender installed (usually
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Blender)
Select the Blender.exe file and click open.

That should associate .blend files with the version of blender.exe found in that folder so that it launches Blender and loads the .blend file you double clicked.

Or you could just go to the Blender settings and click on "Register" in the 'Operating System Settings' if you use Blender 4. This does basically the same as Pte Jack suggested but with less clicks.

If you use Blender 3.x it's called 'Make Default'. They renamed that for 4.0 and added Register / Unregister buttons.
