What he said. You will be getting split EXP. If anything he is making it easier for you to level.
But I agree that this is not fun. No satisfaction in watching someone get all the kills while you sit back doing nothing.
I hope thats the case, it seems to me that in all fights he is able to push forward more, Hes able to tank and outgun me (stats) and I die more frequently.
Granted he is better, but the stats system just seems to amplify the difference

I cant ask a friend to not play the game, he has more free time than me
Maybe find another friend to play with of a closer level.
Or even both create new characters. This way your friend has his main (he can play as he has more free time than you) and a second character he can use when playing with you. This way your characters will only get used together and will always remain the same level.
Until you both hit level cap, if the intent is to play together, then he shouldn't be getting ahead of you.
And it's not like he couldn't work up a second character when playing solo.
