[Suggestion] Remove a negative trait or pick a positive one.
If the level cap is removed how about taking into account a brand new stat has a milestone, let's say 100 days. Every 100 days a merc has spent in your company, he can remove a negative trait or pick a new positive one.

I like the idea, but I probably wouldn't make it dependent on the time spent in your service.
That would be pretty hard to balance without making it somewhat exploitable once we get the larger roster and mercs can stay in reserve for long periods of time.

Honestly, that's too gamey for my taste and against what we're trying to achieve with the traits in the first place - establishing characters as individuals that are different from one another, with their own strengths and weaknesses, the way humans are. Character progress shouldn't be about molding them into perfect machines without any drawbacks.

That said, with the upcoming event system there will be opportunities for characters to lose traits and gain new ones.

It's your game and if it doesn't fit your vision that's your call of course, no argument there.

I wouldn't consider it gamey though, at least not when it comes to losing certain traits.
After dozens of battles a craven character might have built up enough resolve to overcome their fears, or a fat one could've gotten in shape from all the wandering around in heavy gear.
Likewise a mercenary isn't unlikely to become loyal or brave over time and so on.

On a related note, really looking forward to that event system.

I like the idea of traits being changeable through events, but still *mostly* random. Like after a battle you could get a "hideous scars" or "impressive scars" trait that affects resolve in others or inspires fear in your enemies. Or if the character almost died they could have a chance of getting the fearful trait or if they survive a battle unscathed a chance of having it removed.

Yes I like that idea, this is more realistic and I don't agree that everyone need to have drawbacks, there are a lot of warriors which were made heroes, because they overcome their weaknesses through training and experience on battlefield. This should be taken into account for such game as BB.

Yeah I like it better if the characters got their new positive/negative traits during events. Maybe the traits can be random or the result of a choice we make in an event instead of having to pick a specific traits from a list. Probably once more traits are added, something like what jpwrunyan said. The traits could even be on a different list from the starting traits, where 1. Starting traits, each merc has the random starting traits when we hire them, 2. Obtainable traits, these can be obtained from random events or the merc's performance.

Also, I do hope you add the kill and battle count system for each merc so we'll know how many kills and battles have each merc done...

Yes, statistics for each character is a planned feature.

I think it's realistic to think our BBs would evolve over the course of a campaign, but only allowing them to improve their character traits is not. Battle fatigue would be an issue, perhaps being better or worse vs. a enemy type (orcs/undead). I wouldn't leave out the possibilty of them gaining more negative traits. I can see favorite weapon skills improving, etc., but a lot of this is covered by giving them 3 points to improve their skills with each level increase.
