Other Chess-like games like this?
I am loving Battle Brothers. It's engaging, difficult, and all-around fun. I've played and loved lots of TBS tactics-based games like this (including X-COM, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem), but this game feels the most like a good game of chess to me. Are there any other games similar to this that don't rely too much on story and instead focus more on random, epic turn-based battles? Like I said, I've played many, but I'm always looking for more.

Jagged alliance comes to mind.

There is a new Warhammer 40k game for $15 on steam called Regicide. It has a basic chess mode, but when you take an opponents piece, gruesome animations play with your pawns disemboweling each other etc.

In addition to standard chess, it also has another mode with RNG elements where your pieces get abilities with to-hit chances.

Another recommendation is Chaos Reborn. It is not a group/chess game, but has many parallels to BB. Plus, the original creator of XCOM, Jullian Gollop, is the lead designer.

EDIT : I don't own Regicide or Chaos Reborn (yet), but have been following them both for some time. I don't like buying more than one or two games at a time, because then I don't play them.

I was looking at Chaos Reborn. It might be right up my alley. I'll definitely check out Regicide as well. Thanks!

Blood Bowl 1 or 2, Unity of Command, Blackguards 1, the aforementioned Chaos Reborn, are all fairly chess-like.

The best of all time is jagged alliance 2, the second best is xenonauts, which is freaking amazing.

I would certainly not recommend regicide, it's basically chess with wh40k figures. a dud.

Xenonauts is one of my other all time favorite games (it's certainly the best X-Com clone, and even surpasses the original in my opinion).

"Unity of Command" comes to mind. I enjoyed it a lot. There should be a demo for you to check out. Other than that "Battle for Wesnoth" sounds like something you want. It can really get epic in scale, it's turn-based and chess-like strategy game.

Agree with Huggles again. I have it on the other computer, and my sentiments exactly.

And I wouldn't really call Battle Brothers chess-like.

This game reminds me a lot of battle for wesnoth. Also another turn based I really love is front mission 3, you can get it on the ps store currently.

If you want to go down that jagged alliance road and like firearms then check out the "silent storm" series, that was also really great.

I wish there was a way to play these on PC without getting through ♥♥♥♥♥♥ emulators.

The Banner saga is good game, but the battles are not random.
