Non Fencer duelists are pretty similar to your average 2h guys. You can make them BF or nimble, want lots of mdef, good matk and a good fatigue pool (60+). All the popular frontline backgrounds can do it well with good stat rolls. Farmers, Brawlers, Raiders, Hedge Knights and so on.
Fencer duelists are best with extremely high initiative, good melee attack, some mdef and if possible good hp because they'll be nimble. Assassins are best for this. Thiefs, Ratcatchers and Barbarians can make good ones too.
The usual good backgrounds have above average potential to be good Duelists, because they tend to have above average potential to do anything.
Edit: For fencer, Heron already hit on it, but Assassins tend to have the best chances by base stats.
I had to double check how that's even possible when I saw his base melee defense. xD

That one certainly is. =D
Not sure I would go Fencer there without Initiative stars, but he is certainly an amazing bro.
Maybe Qatal Duelist or Initiative Hammer. He'll be great whatever you do.
Indeed, very good against Goblins.. So are Qatal Duelists if you haven't tried those there. Only one guy can get a Goblin Trophy though.
I just rolled over Goblin City a few days ago because I spawned on a three tile hill facing down both the East and North. Easiest Goblin City fight I've ever had. Very anticlimactic with all of the preparations I made. Won in 5 rounds.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ turtle thats some nice terrain generation, most of the time i did try, i was 3 tiles down on some harsh terrain.
Turn 5? were you playing with peasant militia? because if not i cant wrap my head around how you did it so fast :O
18.8% chance with a normal Qatal against Ambushers, so not really. Would need a nice famed version.
Fencers are definitely going to have an easier time oneshotting Goblins.
Last time I did it I was down 3 tiles fighting up so I know the pain. That's what you have to prepare for because you can't know what you will get.
I'm not playing Militia, but for some reason shooting down an Ambusher on turn three or something created a chain reaction panic wave that put over half the Gobbos to fleeing. I also had an Adrenaline bro jump/pin two of the Overseers on turn 2 so they couldn't whip. The third Overseer I dropped to Fleeing with Fearsome Warbow lol.
