Big game hunt: alps, unholds, hexens
Do they spawn the moment I accept the quest, and just wander off all over the map, or do they constantly spawn near me? I'm like 2 weeks into one of these quests already and I've killed only 2 hexes

They instantly spawn and wander off / get probably killed when the location is too far off.

That is a contract you should basically never take.

If you planned to wander around looking for that type of monster maybe, or if it is very nearby and you just saw that monster, but usually you will spend a ton of time and not find anything.

it's so annoying, at most I get maybe 3 kills and like 400 coins, while having wasted a week wandering forests at night hoping for alps to spawn

Only take this if you need faction relations boost. Even then there are better quests. The lesser version (spiders, wolves, etc) of this quest is easier and seems to give more spawns.

the problem is alps, hexens, and unholds rarely spawn in the wild, and when they do it's never bigger than a pack of 3 or 4. Spiders and Wolves come by the dozens at minimum.

You are far better off getting Alps from the villager nightmare contract. Unholds spawn quite a bit and you may be just unlucky. You can also get specific contracts for Unholds and then it is very easy to find them (look for settlements having Unhold Attacks). Hexen feel the most hit or miss of the group.

All the big monsters have missions, including hexen. Much more controlled means of fighting them too. Of the big guys, unholds spawn plenty in the wild, from low end 3 units to at least 9 units. Alps are hard to find in the wild mid to late game, but they sure as heck will jump you as a group of noobs. Alps are one of the reason the OP is finding it difficult. They only are visible at night when your vision is already reduced. Hexen in the wild will range from 1 to 3 hexen plus a gaggle of other creatures. Cursed son missions follow the same for the dificulty skull.

Anyways, there are better means to fight these units, and better means to get faction relationship.

When I take this contract, I return immediately after killing the first group

These contracts should spawn 3 mobs at the moment you accept/initiate the contract. Those 3 mobs should be unkillable by random enemies, but they can wander anywhere on the map. Unless the region in question is very close by to where you initiate it then it becomes pretty likely the enemies will leave the area before you arrive.

If the area is close by, then it can be a good contract to find specific enemies in smaller groups. It's great for hunting small Lindwurm or Schrat groups to get their materials easier than their normal quests where they come in bigger groups.

If the area is not close by then I never take these quests. Too risky.
