Wartales was generally easier, the scaling is much more strict as it's a 1:1, 1 enemy for each unit you have, whereas in Battle Brothers it's much more abstract, meaning you can much more easily encounter harder fights.
Battle Brothers also has the more punishing general mechanics I feel, it has a much harsher ZoC, upgrading gear can be quite difficult at some points if you don't know what you're doing, and you can death spiral more easily.
You can save freely on non ironman.
Saving can be done anytime if not using ironman mode, besides the battles themselves. Autosave is made when entering battles though, allowing you to try again if you so wish.
A great game for someone who doesn't generally enjoy true ironman runs, but loves to implement a plethora of house rules to make it super difficult in other ways. And a great game for ironman as well if that's more your cup of tea.
Wartales... It was different pre-release. They changed things up, a fair bit. It *was* hard. And it took planning and skill. The release version...isn't so much. No where near BB levels, at least. Once you get whatever skill gimmick going in Wartales, you are set. No matter what. Maybe a minor variation on something for specific bosses, but once it's down? Set. Done. Just go steamroll everything as you plod through the lands...
BB? Sort of that way. It just takes a lot longer, and involves scraping by, getting lucky, praying for RNGesus to favour you, and a LOT more planning in advance if you want to roll the gimmick steamroller out. More randomness, more variety. Technically, BB's world is hella smaller then Wartales, but it *feels* a lot larger with how you travel and the things to do while doing so, plus the random contracts in towns and the world events. Unlike Wartales, it's *not* just going to be the same exact thing over and over.
If you are enjoying Wartales, you will probably enjoy BB. It *IS* a lot tougher. But that makes it a lot more rewarding. If you aren't doing Ironman, you can save/load whenever. Even if you are doing Ironman...well...you can crash the game to restart a fight if you do something particularly stupid during it ;)
I honestly haven't played off Ironman for so long in BB I can't remember how the saves actually work, hah.
I'll probably grab BB on the next big sale.
(wouldn't change a thing)
I've never played a more challenging game than BB in the genre, being a turn based strategy fan since X-Com: Apocalypse. Your personal experience may vary but if you have a certain masochistic itch in your gaming taste like some of us do, this game is sure to scratch it aplenty.
I'll be honest and people don't like it when this is pointed out. Tedium, is not difficulty. BB went way off into the weeds with tedium under the guise of difficulty. No ones going to accept a fight with 45 Ifrits that pays 1K, that's not a hard fight, its just tedious to realize that's never going to be worth it so you just roll back to before you accepted the quest.
