Stick to fighting Brigands (thugs) in the beginning. Avoid beasts like wolves which which kill you in seconds.
You will still die (a lot), but keep practicing.
Second things second: spears, swords and shields are good for the early game, as well as making sure your bros have gear on both body and head. Surrounding enemies is also important, both to focus your attacks and to get the surround bonus. Polearms and pitchforks are also very useful to focus your attacks even more and to keep high-value bros out of harms way.
Third thing: Direwolves are brutal in the early game before you've got decent armor. 6 low level bros against three direwolves is winnable, but probably not worth the risk even on expert difficulty. The auto-battle between two NPC groups isn't that accurate, which is how a caravan can survive getting attacked by direwolves.
