Help me pick a sergeant
I'm on my first campaign and have several candidates that I could potentially give the "rally the troops" perk. I'm a bit stumped as to who to choose. I recently picked up a sergeant ambition so I now even more reason to stop dragging my feet. Here are all the bros with decent resolve (I should have removed the weapons to give a clearer fatigue picture oops):

One question that ties me in knots is this concept of "late game bros" that I heard about on youtube. I don't have any direct experience with this but the implication is that the majority of these guys will be retired in one form or another as the game progresses, replaced with more expensive classes that have on average more robust attributes. Why is this significant? Well, the best overall person for the job is probably Bodo but what is his late game potential? If in the late game he is an OK frontilner but a poor sergeant then that would be waste to make him a sergeant. Alternatively, picking someone like Adler (mediocre melee and defense otherwise good) would be more straightforward as someone who would be replaced in the future.

Why? What matters for your Sergeant first and foremost is resolve. Everything else comes second. Adler has 3 stars in resolve and resolve values at level 3 equal to those of the other guys at level 5. He's simply the best in resolve by a mile. Plus he's a wildman, he's bound to have great fatigue, which is the 2nd most important stat to keep spamming rally.

Adler won't be great at hitting people, but that's optional for Sergeants. You need a guy to boost resolve. Adler does this and does it well.

Don't freak out over the late game in your first run. The crises can be cleared with all kinds of bros and harder stuff will still be there, waiting for you, after the learning experience of your first campaign.

Get yourself a decent monk and youre good. They usually have a high resolve stat potential and they get the best random events on the road.

I agree that of the choices Adler is the best bet given the others are higher level already.

You'll field a sergeant when your men are still crappy enough that they'll randomly break mid-fight due to reasons, and/or you're facing enemies that frequently throw resolve checks your way. Outside of these two scenario, you can bench the sergeant.

So you'll want someone with high resolve and decent fatigue, everything else are optional. Adler is the man for the job, you can totally replace him later if you find a better candidate.

PS: You'll get the ambition again if you lose the sash, there's nothing binding here. Take the perk on anyone if you feel like experimenting, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Addler. Not that I would consider him particularly good for the job, but best of of the options anyway. Level 3 with 55 resolve on 3* is not bad, but if you try to do any kind of min-maxing there are much better options that you will likely find with short cycling of recruits. Monk could start at roughly that if you want to be cheap and adventurous noble could be even higher if not hurting for money. Personally I wouldn't even entertain the idea of that wildman as bannerboy outside temporary position holder as only thing he has going for him is 3* resolve leaving his contribution in battles very low.

55 resolve at level 3 is freaking amazing. A sergeant doesn't necessarily need anything other than resolve, and you can beat any fight in the game using a character who makes a minimal contribution to the actual fighting.

The sarge may make a minimal contribution to the fighting but I've found having a decent Melee attack around 60 at L3-5 so he can actually use the polearm/banner is the third requirement after high resolve and high fatigue. When it comes down to it, I find my sarges are poking heads from the back line, sometimes front line, more than they're actually rallying anyway. Once you know what enemies require the countering effect of a sarge you can safely keep him in reserve anyway; no matter what his Matk you'll probably have a better bro when rallies aren't needed.
