I just find swordlance immensely flexible in most situations especially in large number, cleansing the usually troublesome but squishier backline enemies with ease. And in those that they struggle at like when some orc brutes with more plates than sense walk up on them my bois just whip out the mace and clobber them to oblivion.
I find 2h flail underperforming compared to maces, even with the buffs. It's unreliable because you need headshot, and with the number of steel brows enemies I'd rather have the good ol' reliable maces. Still, if I get a good famed roll it'll serve just fine as pocket weapon.
2h flail is a little inconsistent but very satisfying with head hunter, especially famed ones with bonus head hit chance. I love the sound design. Bonk, bonk, bonk! xD
2H Mace: High damage against any enemy. Daze is a very strong debuff such that it got nerfed and is still very strong. I could argue this is the best 2Hander in general. Need to buy a Flanged Mace though as they are very rare to find otherwise.
2H Hammer: High damage, most against armor. Stagger is also a great debuff. Has option for 3-tile AoE. I could also argue that this is the best 2Hander in general. Need to buy the metal Hammer as it is very rare to find otherwise.
2H Axe: Highest single target damage, but splits it between both body parts. Can potentially deal two morale checks if both hits deal 15+ damage. Can make better use of Fearsome than other single target 2Handers for this reason (though secondary hit needs to deal 15+ damage even with Fearsome). Bardiche has a line AoE though is weaker than other options for single target attacks. Very available as Mansplitters are abundant and Chosen axes are also easy to find and are the best of the Chosen weapons. I could probably argue that this is the best 2Hander in general.
2h Flail: Best option against shielded enemies as Pound ignores the shield bonus. Will otherwise deal less damage on average than the above options. Benefits greatly from HH and weapon mastery as the head bonuses are very strong, but body hits will be lackluster compared to other 2Handers. 30% stun chance is a worse debuff than what the above weapons get. Berserk Chains are abundant to find, and the regular metal 2H Flail is also often found on Fallen Heroes. Can be a good way to transition an early game Flail bro who was farming Raiders for gear into something stronger for when Raiders aren't a concern anymore. Community might call 2H Flails a meme build, but it's effective enough to use.
2H Sword: Weaker than the above options in raw damage, except against low or non armored enemies, due to its much lower armor ignoring damage stat. However, it gets hit chance bonuses on all of its attacks and has both the line and swing AoE attacks for versatility, which is nice. Still, a talented bro might prefer the Hammer instead. Greatswords are not easy to find, so you usually have to buy it and it is expensive, unless you don't mind angering a Noble House and bumming it from one of their Zweihanders.
2H Cleavers: Feel like a different weapon class as they are 4AP. Would compare them to Duelists rather than to the above options.
And therein lies the real answer: marry the weapon choice to the traits/background etc of each bro - ie the appropriate weapon on the appropriate bro - and the preference order becomes far more fluid...
For debuffing targets and smashing through armour
Strong vs heavy units - Orcs, Chosen, Unholds, Nobles etc.
Man Splitter
Slashing Weapons: Greatswords, Cleavers
Line attacks, Bleeds and Decapitate
Strong vs light units - Beasts, Undead, Goblins, Southern armies etc.
Polearms: Swordlances, Polehammers, Polemaces, Poleaxes, Billhooks, Pikes
Versatile category. Billhooks pull and stagger units, pikes have knock back, many fun options
Strong vs. everything. Allows 'double stacking' 2 units to help focus down single targets
Don't go for any of those fancy stuns and dazes. Remember, a dead enemy is better than a dazed enemy.
