And thats a really stupid reason not to but a game but you are free to do so.
This is a blog post of why they went the path they did:

Peace
What is "ugly" is of course a matter of taste. I was mostly referring to the style and the decision not to go for more advanced animiations and skipping the legs (as described in the blog post).
If the graphics is very ugly to you and this is a deal breaker for you, you shouldn't buy the game (unless it can be modded of course) as I am pretty sure the devs won't change the graphical path at this stage. Graphics is really time consuming to work with.
Then you'll love it, and come back here and apologize for ever doubting it.

As for modability - decision about how modable the game will be will come at later date, when more vital gameplay functions will get implemented for the base game so you might want to wait until then.
You brought back some fond memories which prompted me to pick up Fantasy Gerneral over at GOG...
I played fantasy general a bit... but I recall it to be a bit of a savescum as you couldn't really lose units in the campaign or it would be impossible later on (at least at hard difficulty). Unless I am mistaken. Long time ago.
Discount campaigns can work on me, but mostly psychological. Most people in Sweden can spend 30-40 euro on something that is worth something for them without a blink (or drink or smoke it away ;). I totally get that you want those old titles cheap though.
I don't remember if I bought Battle Brothers on discount. Might have. But I choose to upgrade to supporter version because the money isn't a real factor for me at that level (having a job in Sweden) and it reflects the fun I have witht the game... and expect to have in the future.
I would recommend getting BB now if you think you will like the future product as it supports it's development. And as it's pretty fun to play around with meanwhile (although not the finished product) it's totally worth the money. But... it's always hard to give advice about decisions where money is involved as the situation for people is so different.
That said... I will go and take a coffee and sallad/sandwich at a café later today. Will likely cost almost the same as Battle Brothers did ;)
