Battle Brothers requires a video card with updated drivers that support OpenGL 3.3. In most cases, any issues with starting the game can be solved following these steps;

Update your video drivers

• Go to the website of your video card or integrated gpu manufacturer and download the most recent driver package. You'll find drivers for Nvidia here[www.nvidia.com] and drivers for ATI here[www.amd.com].
  
• If you have an older ATI card, like the HD4xxx series, update your video drivers here[support.amd.com].
  
• If you have an older ATI card, like the HD5xxx, HD6xxx or HD7xxx series, update your video drivers here[support.amd.com].
  
• If you have an ATI or Nvidia card, make sure that it is set as the prefered graphics processor for OpenGL. You can read on how to do this here[www.pcadvisor.co.uk].
  
• If you have an integrated Intel HD Graphics, update your video drivers here[downloadcenter.intel.com]. If you use a laptop, note that in some cases you may have to deinstall any video drivers provided by your laptop's manufacturer first.

Changing settings via the Nvidia control panel (if you are a Nvidia user)

• Restart your computer if you already attempted to start the game.
  
• Open up the Nvidia control panel.
  
• Go to "Power Management", change it to "Highest Performance" instead of "Adaptive" (this can also be set specifically for Battle Brothers instead of using the global setting).
  
• Start Battle Brothers normally.

My video card doesn't support OpenGL 3.3!

OpenGL 3.3 is officially required for Battle Brothers as written on the Steam store page. However, one other thing you can try after updating your video drivers is this.

• Right-click on Battle Brothers in your Steam library
  
• Select 'Properties'
  
• Select 'Set Launch Options'
  
• Enter '-gl30'

This will force the game to run on OpenGL 3.1, but your video card is still required to support several extensions that are part of the OpenGL 3.3 specifications. This is reported to work with the Intel HD 3000 which otherwise doesn't support OpenGL 3.3 on Windows (but does on Linux, oddly enough).

Other things to try

There's several other things you could try just in case.

• If you have "Plays.tv" installed (comes with some video drivers, so you may not even be aware of it), close it before running Battle Brothers.
  
• Put the game on the exception list of your anti-virus solution, or disable it temporarily. Some anti-virus solutions may be over-eager and detect false-positives in Battle Brother's executable due to the Steam DRM. The BattleBrothers.exe may have also been quarantined or deleted, in which case you'll have to reinstall the game.
  
• Try to unplug any additional input devices, like joysticks and controllers, as well as any headset you may be using.
  
• Try to disable your second monitor, if you have any.
  
• If you don't have any sound device at all with your computer, try starting the game with the '-nosound' command line parameter. See the previous section on how to apply it.

So, my issue was trying to play it with a monitor... is there gonna be a fix for this? Because I mainly use the second monitor...

For those who plays on the laptop with switchable graphic adaptors and has a problem with video drivers update here is my post from the official battle brothers forum. Maybe someone will find an answer to its questions.

The main topic is that my laptop has switchable graphic adapter system (Intel VGA for energy saving mode and AMD Radeon for “heavy” applications). The problem looks as following: you can use only the drivers from the official website of the laptop’s manufacturer which provides a pack of old versions of drivers for each videocard and doesn’t update them. If you want to update drivers separately using the drivers from VGA manufecterer’s site you cannot switch between graphic adaptors, cannot change the brightness of screen, and overally cannot use your videocards correctly.
I started to investigate how to manage this and found out that this is very widespread problem for the laptops with switchable VGA system and it concerns not only HP laptops of course. Finally the most useful way to solve this problem is to install the pack from this guy http://leshcatlabs.net/about-us/ And I’m happy how it works, Batlle Brothers have returned to my life

Couldn't start the game today. Found out it was because my Audio service had crashed so I had like no audio device. Restarted the service and the game start.

I'm having a problem where the mouse scroll is super choppy. I run 3840x2160 res, and it makes it so that the tracking is pretty jerky if I don't move the curor incredibly slowly. Known bug? Should I lower res?

Try to enable/disable (depending on your current setting) the 'Hardware Cursor' option in the game's options menu.

Hello, I can't open this game from this new edition. I have re-installed it again.
The problem is when i open it from steam or document, it'll show a window 'the program is stop'. I can open it at last edition.

What does "very long" mean?
For me it takes about 14 seconds to start the game and loading (battles) takes about 5 seconds.

According to http://www.amd.com/en-gb/products/graphics/desktop/6000/6570 your graphic card should support up to OpenGL 4.1.
The "-gl30" launch option is, as far as I know, only of use when your graphic solution does not support at least OpenGL 3.3.

How did you check the version of the graphics card driver? In my experience, those auto-update functions of windows or catalyst control center or whatever do not work and will tell you your drivers are up to date, even if they are not. I'd recommend to check the version manually.

Apart from that, the solutions presented in this thread are for the case the game does not start at all, if I am correctly informed.

My uneducated guess would be that your CPU simply cannot process the stuff faster.


Anyway, I am sure, if you send your dxdiag and the log file to [e-mail], just like it is stated at the end of the OP, rapsdjff will have a look at it and maybe able to tell how to fix your problem or improve your situation.

Well this stinks. I have an I5 intel intergrated graphics card and they wont support Open GL3.3 Not sure if I should refund now or save it for my desktop, though I got the game to play on my laptop. Why make a graphically simple game like this require this sort of hoop jumping?

I might be wrong on this, but if I recall correctly, the Open GL version required increased to 3.3 (formerly 3.0) as the devs changed the UI library that is used, because the former one is not updated anymore and caused technical issues, crashes and bugs that otherwise could not have been fixed.

Hey thanks for the reply and I apologize for the grumpy comment. According to Intels troubleshooting forums they do not support 2nd generation intergrated chips so Im out of luck.

I am currently bed ridden so I ran my desktop to my bed so it works out in the end. Great game by the way, the overland map reminds me of a mix of Darklands and Mount and Blade.
