Is the gnarled staff pointless?

I just killed a goblin shaman and got his staff as a reward, does it do anything or is it just an average mace?

It's completely outclassed by the flanged mace, not counting fatigue

Can you also do some of the staff's skill descriptions?

The stats really are not impressive. If this would be a 2h mace/weapon, I think, it would be way more interesting, considering that these staffs are not that common.

The skills are just the standard mace moves, bash and stun.
