Fencing Sword
Hi. So, after a solid 5 months, has anyone figured out a good use for the fencing sword yet? I really want to love it but it doesn't seem all that useful. The low armour damage and penetration means it should really only be used against low / unarmoured enemies. I'm assuming it works on a specialised ini build, but why would I bring a specialised build to fight against low level raiders? Especially when an archer does the same job better because it requires less positioning. I can't see it being better with goblins either.

And what does it replace? A backline melee build? An archer? A frontliner? Who would I use it instead of?

Archers.

Lots of Archers.

Well, yes, quite. I was more asking if anyone has a fencing sword build they take to goblin fights. Obviously no-one fields 12 archers to that fight, so I wonder whether a decent fencer helps. I feel like he'd need to have a decent shield or he'd be toast; running straight down the goblins' throats is dangerous. That means no duellist, I'd say, especially after the nerf to quick hands. And it might just be better to sit far back and put a good shield wall up with heavy tanks. After all, goblins kinda suck at getting through heavy armour.

Got a decent legendary fencing sword on my current run so built a nimble duelist using it. Best use I've found is he is great at decimating geists and getting to the necromancer quickly. The battlefield mobility ignoring zoc is their best asset, can squeeze into and out of tight spots. Not sure if its 'best' for min/max, but I've had fun using him, he's 2nd only to my lone wolf in kills.

ok, it's not a trap, i'm dishing out much more damage here with my nimble, duelist fencer guy:

- He is now level 11, after taking all the necessary defend perks, I finally got:
+ Hp: 78;
+ Melee Atk: 87
+ Melee Def: 57
+ Range Def: 25
+ Initiative: 140 (and he always got the first move in all turn, even ahead of those annoying ghost);
+ I'm currently loving him when it comes to: Gheist, Goblin (1 hit all kind of goblin except for those wolf rider and goblin chief), Orc Berserker takes 102(!) damage to his body (not head) from his Lunge, and normally 7x damage, so he usual take 1.5 turn to kill a berserker by himself (see screenshot below that he kill one on the 2nd round and still he got 5ap left - all damage to the berserker done by himself).

My build is actually not that damage focus since i don't take executioner and killing Frenzy (i'm playing on ironman for my first lonewolf origin so i'm more cautious). But imagine that if you take this guy those two + 45% damage perk and cope with the fact that he is always the first one to move in all turn, i would imagine this guy could be one of the best damage dealer ever...

One important note is that now I just realized that because Lunge uses initiative to add more damage, so this fencing guy is the only guy who can get his damage improved on forever as long as he puts point on initiative...interesting, wonder how much damage I can get him after giving the potion on initiative and also at leve 30, i imagine that it would be enough to one shot quite a few big bad guys.

if you say so. i still think its not worth it and there is more then one alternative to this thing.

Having alternatives is something good.

A Fencing guy is acutally really viable against tons of enemies.

Espacially with the new Relentless perk. Pair it with Dodge, Nimble and give your Fencing guy just some ~15 Fat-combined Armor and there you go.

Pre-DLC I had a Dodge-LW-Duelist (Thief Backround with 3 INI, 2 MATK and 2 MDEF stars) and he was basically invincible, even when fatigued.
With a fencing sword, he also was able to didge out a lot of damage (3 kills per round on Goblins/Armorless Orc Youngs/Spiders) and he was one of my No1 DPS on Unholds/Lindwurms/Zombies.

If you get your hands on a good famed Fencing Sword and take Relentless into your build, such a Bro can go real crazy.

You've got my interest. Do you mind sharing the perks you're using?

sure, see below for your reference. Also, if I could change something, I would actually remove Pathfinder due to the fact that this guy's Lunge helps jumping through tile without incurring fatigue and he can Lunge to higher ground as well, so I would have picked "lone wolf" or "Crippling Strike" instead.

Also on great recruit that has stars on Melee Atk and Melee Def, then Gift would be replaced as well. In case of such recruit, I probably would go with Crippling Strike & Executioner for more damage. And remove Gift as well as Pathfinder. That would be what I like.

He is perk-starved for sure and definitely i would not have such build unless he got Ironlung and good melee attk. Also he has needs for a great famed fencing sword. Pretty demanding, even than me wife ;)

He does quite ok against heavy armored opponents thanks to being duelist and fast attack. He could solo a few orc warrior by himself for sure and often take down one in 2-3 turn.

The fencing guy now is probably the biggest damage dealer in my band (except for the unkillable lonewolf, ironlung, twohanded orc greataxe wielding guy) because of the numerous trashmob you got in the game (goblin, orc young, berserker, barbs, rider etc.). I'm thinking of getting another one if I get another famed fencing sword and a great recruit having ironlung and those great stars!

Awesome build. You've got a new fan.
Fencing sword allows you to ignore zones of control when you lunge and that by itself is awesome. Especially against goblins.

I have a fencer also, with athletic and quick trait. Perks of student, recover, path finder, dodge, relentless, sword mastery, lonewolf, berserk, nimble, duelist and killing frenzy..hes level 12 now with 92mattk, 31mdef, 13rdef, 72hp, 53res, 127ini and 96fat with fencing sword, noble mail on..he flanks in 2-3 turns and just obliterates the backline for human faction, outruns gobbos, and also effective with skellies, im enjoying so much with this build as he racks up kills due to his high damage in accord with his initiative..but i dont have a named fencing sword..i hope i ll find one..

Wish I took a screen shot of him but in my last run I found a bastard with stars in HP mAtk and Ini at lvl 11 he was at like 102 mAtk 120HP with colosses and some wherein the 140+ Ini in armor. His special fencing leap attack did upwards of 120dmg.
Belial Jun 25, 2019 @ 11:56am
Yeah Fencers are OP if you can get 130+ Ini, some of the best DD in the game if not the best. Switch to smthn for armor I guess.
Falka Jun 25, 2019 @ 9:17pm
What can you do but a fencer, when you get such a beauty at day 5?

He's gonna have 163 Ini and 42 MD (46 with confident) at lvl 11. Not gonna lie, I'm in love ;)
