Also: Monks have A LOT of good events or bring good options for many events.
Since babarians can trigger the "mess with townsfolks" event (or whatever it is called) the monk is really worth it there because his option there will 100% negate all the bad effekts.
However, I haven't gotten this event myself nor seen it first-hand.
I find that he's pretty good at his job as a horn-tooter. He'll be outclassed eventually, but he helps you take early undead camps. My group is actually specialized vs. humans with injury-focused perks and whatnot, but he has been clutch for morale many times.
Yeah that event is actually really cool, the only problem is the frequency for it to trigger is set lower than some of the other base monk events so the probability of it triggering is extremely low.
