~15-20% is just the rate. There's no selling for 100% except for trade/treasure items.

That's just how it is balanced. This is pretty normal in games.

Would it make you feel better if they sold for 100% of their worth but all items were "worth" 80% less? Then everything in the game would have to cost 5x as much to buy. It would be the same result.

A large amount of your money comes from selling stuff. If they sold for 100% value (or near it) and everything else stayed the same then it would trivialize the game.

These are just the numbers and rates they decided and balanced upon. It's arbitrary sure, but not ridiculous. You have to pick something to go by.

Keep a basic round shield in the inventory and use that as a guide to getting a good deal or not.

It's basically worth 20, ie 20% of its value. Below that don't sell unless desperate, above that sell everything including the kitchen sink, which you shouldn't be lugging around the map anyway.

Highest I've ever reached is 23-24 playing with economy on the middle setting.

i don't know of any major RPG or Squad Tactical where merchants buy your recovered / used gear for face value, do you?
Think of a pawn shop in real life, you come in with Granny's engagement ring; thinking, sure given the original retail price, +50 years of inflation, and 2+ generations sentimental value and you think it's worth $5,000. At the pawn shop they offer you $1,000 -- you feel insulted but if you need the money and there's no medieval E-bay you'll take it.

Excuse me... Pawnshops were the medieval e-bay...

And if they bought your stuff at face value then there would be other gold sinks designed into the game to keep the economy balanced (probably super high wares)...

Yes mostly correct, some mechanics are very similar, that's why you get 20%.
In reality in a modern pawn you might get 10%.
But Pawn shops would also be 1 or 2 per small town so get at best 2 offers on items X, from business sharps that do price margin differential all day long for for a living.

Whereas we've all seen stuff sell on e-bay for silly prices that a sensible person wouldn't pay, because 90% of the audience viewing an item are passionate collectors not thinking about resale, or they're just a noob looking for an item and didn't think about the price. The mechanics of e-bay and the potential eyeballs mean an ill-priced item can get several offers that might be 2x,4x,8x, what would happen in a pawn shop.

People often go into pawn shops expecting retail value for their old used items. Apparently the poster is one of them. Its always the same people who cant see the other persons viewpoint, obviously. You cant explain things to them because they dont care about youT viewpoint to begin with. They will just tell you thats ridiculous.

probably because in the game shop keepers are sellin the same exact item for 50% more AT TIMES and still trying to buy it off you for 80% less. what kind of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is that?

Arbitrage is what it is - buying cheap to sell dear. A system built upon arbitrage is known as mercantilism.

That's what the in-game trade goods mechanism is all about; eg, you buy peat or wood when and where it's cheaper than standard price, lug it around until you find a place which is prepared to pay more than standard price for it, and so you sell it, thus making a profit to spend as you wish. The lower the price you pay and the higher the price you sell, the greater the profit you make. Plain simple arbitrage.

Given that looting requires fighting which leads to extra costs via healing, fixing broken items and the fact that markets never buy it anywhere near its first-hand value, more money should generally be made by arbitrage of trade goods. The exceptions are where the loot is slightly harmed and large in quantity, or is worth a lot such as named items (but does anyone ever sell named items?). However that's not feasible in game as trade goods are limited in supply whereas loot is more available, and thus the game is balanced to force one to engage in combat because that is the sole method of 'beating' the game by improving ones squad, ie leveling its bros up.

And the main method of making money in game isn't arbitrage or looting at all, but fulfilling contracts.

Many people mistakenly believe that arbitrage is capitalism, but capitalism is far more than simply making a profit and is a completely different thing entirely, dealing with the mode of production etc.

Orc shields and goblin crap goes to the pawnshop very often, to be fair. So are many non-meta weapons that get crappy roll.
